? THE Hunter will swelter today as the mercury is expected to rise above 40 degrees in some parts of the region.

Singleton can expect a top of 41 degrees with Cessnock, Maitland and Scone following with tops of 39 degrees.

It should be cooler on the coast with Newcastle expected to reach 35 degrees, but the city's beaches are expected to fill up early after an overnight low of 20 degrees.

There will be some relief by early afternoon with possible storms predicted ahead of a cooler southerly change on the region's coast.
