LAND Rovers have always had a cult following, especially among cashed-up bush folk, so the news of a special edition of the Defender - possibly the last of its type - will be welcomed in certain parts.

It's believed the car that has been Land Rover's mainstay for the past 60 years is on its last legs, with its future in Australia guaranteed only until 2010, when British pedestrian impact laws come into force requiring significant revision of the existing design.

Only 82 of the SVX special-edition Defenders will be brought to Australia, featuring distinctive exterior design and interior features to make it "the most sought-after and stylish Defender ever produced", according to Land Rover.

Built to celebrate the company's 60th birthday, the SVX comes with some very un-agricultural additions, including satellite navigation, Recaro seats, a leather steering wheel, heated seats, sunroof, Clarion audio system with sub-woofer and amplifier, and even iPod compatibility.

Five-spoke alloy wheels, tubular side-steps, a reinforced aluminium front under-shield and special decals make the $63,320 SVX "the ultimate Defender", Land Rover Australia general manager Roger Jory enthuses. -- STEVE COLQUHOUN
